Genesis Block Member Profiles: opiAID Technology Assisted Therapy for Opioid Epidemic
Data shows that every day, roughly 128 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. The opioid epidemic has gained national attention in recent years with the Center for Disease Control estimating that the total “economic burden” of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.
Wilmington, North Carolina startup opiAID, is using technology to reduce the cost while improving outcomes for those who are struggling with addiction. “OpiAID believes addiction is a physiologic response, not a moral failing. Using technology for good, we seek to help our neighbors being affected by addiction in our community,” says co founder David Reeser.
Reeser and partner Stan Martin created opiAID — a unified, cloud-based platform that is billed as the world’s first technology assisted therapy that addresses opioid abuse. The goal of opiAID, is the development of the world’s first technology assisted therapy (TAT) that addresses opioid abuse. The wearable bio-metric device will use advanced data technology and real-time cloud-based communication to “detect cravings and alert a family member or counselor in the event of an emergency.”
